Alhimaya – Defense of Civic Space and Protection of Human Rights Defenders in the Euro-Mediterranean

Alhimaya, which means protection in Arabic, aims to contribute to the creation of violence-free societies that confront the growing authoritarianism in the Euro-Mediterranean region – with special focus on Catalonia, Morocco, Western Sahara, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, and Iraq – by offering support, protection, defense, and comprehensive care for human rights defenders.

The goal is to strengthen individuals and collectives of human rights defenders in the Euro-Mediterranean region for the sustainability and achievement of their work, both in physical spaces and online.

With the activities of the project, we aim to:

  1. Detect the techniques, agents, and actions that limit civic space and the right to defend rights in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

  2. Ensure that individuals and entities defending human rights in the Euro-Mediterranean region have and take ownership of mechanisms to improve their protection.

  3. Develop a communication and awareness strategy for the critical mobilization of Catalan civil society in the protection of civic space and the right to defend rights.

  4. Implement a socio-political advocacy strategy to promote public policy coherence based on human security, transparency, and accountability in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The organizations that promote Al-himaya:

The Novact Institute for Nonviolence is a non-profit association dedicated to conflict transformation and peacebuilding. It has been working in the Euro-Mediterranean region for over 20 years.

Irídia – Center for the Defense of Human Rights is an association that works to promote and defend human rights, particularly civil and political rights.

SUDS is an association of solidarity, feminist, and internationalist commitment, dedicated to a model of social transformation that helps create alternatives to the capitalist, racist, and patriarchal system, and that enables the eradication of inequalities and deep inequities.
